What should you do when things aren’t going smoothly? – for trainees & young adults

Accept the challenge

There will always be challenging times during an apprenticeship or when starting your career. Not everything always works out right away. Some tasks are confusing, it may be difficult to establish good rapport with other employees, or you might wonder how you can balance so many tasks. You may also experience those moments when everything becomes too much for you and you feel in over your head.

Of course, difficulties like this can be a lot to take in, but they’re normal. Most apprentices and young adults experience them. What matters is how you deal with the situation. We’ve put together a few tips.

How to overcome difficulties

Carry out a reality check

Whether it’s the feeling of not being able to do something well, the belief that you’re not up to a task or able to pass a test – take a moment to consider and ask yourself: «Does this feeling actually correspond to reality? What evidence supports this feeling and what contradicts it?»

Engage your inner helpers

We all have things that we can do well and feel easy. Look for these inner helpers. Maybe you’re particularly good at improvising! Or you’re funny! Maybe you’re extremely organised. Use these abilities deliberately.

Accept your minor shortcomings

Nobody’s perfect. Even when it seems that others succeed in everything – this is simply not true. Other people also make mistakes and have things they don’t do very well. You’re okay just the way you are! If you accept yourself, others will too.

Get support

Sometimes it’s difficult to ask others for help. You may feel that it’s embarrassing, but it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Firstly, most people like to help – and secondly, asking makes them feel important. Give it a try!
