Supporting Apprentices and Young Adults – for Training Supervisors and Line Managers

Boost Early Career Prospects

Apprentices and young adults are at the beginning of their careers. They still have a lot to learn in terms of expertise and skills. Their professional identity also takes time to develop.

The first stages of a young person’s working life play a decisive role in how their career develops. Their experiences during training and when starting their career have a significant influence on whether they succeed in building up resources such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and resilience.

The following measures will help your apprentices and young adults get off to a good start in their careers.

The Big Five for young people

Age-appropriate general conditions

Enable autonomy in performing tasks. Ensure that apprentices and young adults have the information they need to carry out their tasks. Involve young workers in decision-making.

Inspiring team spirit

For young people, it’s essential that they feel they’re part of a good team. Promote cohesion with activities that create a sense of belonging. Promote intergenerational contact too – this reduces reservations about interacting.

Acceptance and appreciation

Always focus on the things that the apprentices and young adults are already doing well. Regularly show them genuine appreciation. This is as vital to young people as the air they breathe. Ask explicitly for their opinion on certain topics. This will show your interest and provide you with valuable input. If you have criticism, follow the rules for giving feedback. Always start with things that are being done well.

Personal skills and conviction of control

Put your trust in the apprentices and young adults! Show them where they already have knowledge and experience. Young people are encouraged if they hear over and over again: «You can do it!» Provide experiences that enable them to feel: «I am in control of the situation» – this builds their sense of self-efficacy.

Meaningfulness

For young people, it’s important to recognise the purpose behind a task. Provide comprehensive task packages that are clearly spelled out.
